Jammu Kashmir, a Muslim majority region, has drawn the world’s attention in recent months due to a highly volatile and elusive situation in the valley. To solve this imbroglio, Pakistan and India have used both, peaceful negotiations and wars, ultimately sparking a long, drawn-out debacle of politics, arms struggle and war. Pakistan as a nation has always condemned the Indian government’s actions in Jammu Kashmir.
Kashmiris have been struggling through death and destruction for a long time, and it is this time when Kashmiris have stood up for their freedom and supported freedom fighters even at the encounter sites so that their sentiments must be answered and that their right to self-determination be granted to them, as is evident from the UN resolutions.
Kashmiris look upon the nation of Pakistan as their saviour and liberator. Jammu Kashmir’s stones and bricks shout the slogans of Pakistan. It is the Pakistani flag which Kashmiris raise against a tyrant India and it is the same flag which is taken as their burial shroud. While the Pakistani nation has supported the Kashmir cause, Kashmiris also call out to Indian Muslims to help them retaliate and revolt against the mutually tyrant regime.
From the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 to the Gujrat massacre in 2002, from Muzaffarnagar riots to lynching and butchering of thousands of Muslims around India, the concept of “secular India” has collapsed. The Gao Rakshaks, Bajrang Dal, RSS and other terrorist organizations, backed by Indian agencies, have made it clear that India is openly its Hindutva ideology in which there is no room for Muslims, Christians and others.
The different sections, societies and ideological groups existing within India have showed their support for the Indian army while backing their sins. Tribal youths of Jabhua in Madhya Pradesh stood up by committing to fight against Kashmiri stone-pelters with slingshots. The leaders of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress in MP have supported the formation of such a squad comprising of local youths – who are masters of this art. RSS, the extremist anti-Muslim wing of the BJP, marching with guns and lathis in Jammu Kashmir, aimed to inject fear into the masses. The retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra has plummeted to new depths of inhumanity by tweeting, “Any self-respecting nation should have shot 100 stone-pelters by now.”
These two extreme poles, strict human rights violation of minorities (Muslims) and extremist POVs regarding the Kashmir conflict, are somewhat keeping Indian extremists on the same page in their ‘war’ against Muslims. Though not all of them; Arundhati Roy and some prominent activists including the students and teachers of JNU along with several other universities of India, have risked their very lives standing by the truth. Kashmiris have always bound their expectations with Pakistani and Indian Muslims, for the world doesn’t have much to offer in their suffering other than formalized ceremonial talks. It is time the Muslims of India wake up and stand in solidarity with their Kashmiri brethren, against a mutual enemy that haunts our peace, religion, harmony and precious lives.
Muslims residing in India have due responsibility in this regard. To fulfill this role requires thinking more like a Muslim that belongs to one ummah. While their own brothers and sisters are being tortured, raped, harassed and killed mercilessly in their backyard, it is time Indian Muslims speak up about the atrocities committed by India and take a strong stand against its war crimes, while representing the true sentiments of Kashmiris, ultimately winning their trust.
Fear dwells in the minds of Indian Muslims; if they support Kashmir, Hindutva forces will further oppress them and work them into a corner. But it must be understood that Hindutva ideology in India cannot take strength until the minorities (Indian Muslims) themselves submit to their pressure. A united Muslim front, if it works together, can put up a strong resistance against any Hindutva attempts to pressurize them into accepting their narrative or demands. Indian Muslims must realize their own strength and know that Pakistan and the Ummah will not abandon them.
To uphold truth, justice and protect rights of humanity is somewhat an impossible dream under the shadow of a tyrant. The Indian Muslims will always remain a minority in India, but in Pakistan, Muslims are in majority and so their rights are secured. Jammu Kashmir is also a Muslim-majority region. Indian Muslims must protect and preserve their identity and cultivate themselves into practicing Muslims that take pride in their Islam and identity as Muslims. The rope of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) unites us if we both, Indian and Pakistani Muslims, hold fast to it.
“And hold fast, all together by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves” (Aal e Imran 3:103)
The cultural aggression of India must be challenged with Islamic culture, united as a single Ummah while leaving secondary differences aside. This is the only way out of the daily sufferings or lynching of Muslims, be it the Muslims in India tortured and killed by Cow Vigilantes, Bajrang Dal, Gao Rakshaks, RSS etc. or Kashmiris under Indian barbarism.
Remember what the Messenger of Allah, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
“The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Bukhari)
The tales of torture and suffering would not cease to stop unless the Muslims of India once again take hold of their destiny. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) has planned for us victory, but it would not come by merely appealing to the rationale of the very tyrants who oppress, and neither with their allies. Kashmiris resist because they refuse to accept any Hindu dominance or occupation over them. To support them is duty, it is Islam. To support Kashmiris is being human. Together we Pakistani and Indian Muslims can strengthen each other, lay aside our differences, and let not Radcliffe divide us when we share the same Qibla. Together we can forge a strong alliance against the tyrant Hindutva Ideology-thriving in India. Not just the Kashmir but the entire peace of the subcontinent and its adjoining regions depends on it.
